🤔 Concern #1: “What if it leaks?”
This is by far the most common fear — and for good reason. Older skylights or poor DIY installs are often to blame. But modern skylight systems, when installed professionally with proper flashing, are built to withstand NZ’s rain and wind.
✅ Fix:
- Always use flashing kits specific to your roof type (e.g. tile vs metal)
- Choose an experienced installer with a leak-free warranty
Leaks are usually an installation issue, not a product flaw.
🔥 Concern #2: “Will it make my room too hot?”
Not if you choose the right skylight. Many newer models are designed with low-SHGC glazing, reflective tubing, and diffusers that soften direct sunlight. You can enjoy bright rooms without the sweat.
✅ Fix:
- Opt for tubular skylights with built-in diffusers in heat-sensitive areas
- For flat glass, ask about heat-reducing coatings or vented models
🧊 Concern #3: “Will it make my home colder in winter?”
Some homeowners worry that a skylight means more heat loss. While any roof penetration can impact insulation, this is minimal with quality products — especially tubular designs with sealed shafts.
✅ Fix:
- Choose double-glazed or insulated domes for colder regions
- Ask your installer about thermal breaks and shaft insulation
In fact, tubular skylights often have better insulation than windows.
💸 Concern #4: “Is it expensive to install or maintain?”
Skylight costs vary, but for many NZ homes, a basic sun tube install starts under $1,000. Maintenance is virtually nil — no wiring, no bulbs, and no moving parts (unless motorised).
✅ Fix:
- Start with one skylight in a dark area and see the impact
- Ask for a quote that includes flashing, install, and GST
🧱 Concern #5: “Will it damage my roof or structure?”
A common fear — but easily avoided. Most skylights fit between rafters or can be installed with no structural cutting. Retrofitting is common in NZ, especially in homes 15+ years old.
✅ Fix:
- Only work with qualified daylighting professionals
- Request an assessment before installation to plan around framing
☀️ Bottom Line:
Most skylight concerns stem from outdated products or rushed installations. With today’s materials and best practices, you can enjoy natural light without the drama.
